Remembering Michel Pineda: Espanyol Legend Dies at 62, Leaving Football Fans in Mourning

Football fans are mourning the death of former Espanyol striker Michel Pineda, who passed away on Thursday, October 29, 2026, at the age of 62.

Pineda was one of the most respected players in Espanyol's history, having played an important role during one of the club's memorable periods in the 1980s. His death has brought sadness to supporters who remember his contribution to the Spanish club.

Born in Gien, France, on June 9, 1964, Pineda began his professional football career at French side Auxerre. He later moved to Espanyol in 1984, where he spent six seasons between 1984 and 1990.

During his time at the Spanish club, the striker made 233 official appearances and scored 73 goals. His performances helped him become a popular figure among Espanyol supporters.

One of the biggest achievements of his career came during the 1987/88 season when Espanyol reached the UEFA Cup final under manager Javier Clemente. The team defeated several strong European opponents before facing Bayer Leverkusen in the final.

Although Espanyol eventually lost the final on penalties after surrendering a three-goal first-leg advantage, the campaign remains one of the most memorable moments in the club's history.

Pineda also had an interesting connection with French football legend Eric Cantona. The two players became close friends while playing together at Auxerre.

After leaving Espanyol, Pineda continued his career with French side Toulon before returning to Spain to play for Racing Santander, Lleida and Alavés. He retired from professional football in 1996.

Interestingly, Pineda later scored the decisive goal for Racing Santander against his former club Espanyol in a 1993 promotion playoff. The result sent Racing to the top division while Espanyol suffered relegation. Despite the achievement, Pineda reportedly struggled emotionally because of his attachment to Espanyol.

Following the announcement of his death, Espanyol expressed condolences to his family, friends and former teammates.

Michel Pineda will be remembered for his goals, dedication and contribution to an unforgettable generation of Espanyol players.
