Former Athlete Alleges How Uhuru Failed To Keep A Promise That He Once Made To Him & Others

Kenyan rugby legend Collins Injera has spoken out about promises made to members of the national rugby sevens team following their historic victory at the Singapore Sevens tournament in April 2016.

Injera, who was part of the squad that made history by defeating Fiji 30-7 in the main cup final, has revealed that the team never received the brand-new Toyota Prado vehicles reportedly promised by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The victory was a landmark achievement for Kenyan rugby, as Shujaa stunned the highly rated Fijian side to claim the Singapore Sevens title for the first time.

The remarkable performance attracted national attention, with Kenyatta reportedly making several pledges to reward the players for their achievement. Among the promises was an assurance that each member of the 12-man squad would receive a brand-new Toyota Prado.

However, according to Injera, the promised vehicles never materialised, even after a decade.

The rugby star brought the matter back into the spotlight through his Instagram Stories, where he shared a screenshot of an article discussing the pledges made following the team's historic triumph.

Reacting to the passage of time, Injera expressed disbelief that the players were still waiting for the vehicles.

"Wuehhh 10 years later bado tunangoja zero mileage, mchezo wa TAUN!!! 😂" he wrote.

Injera also recalled another promise allegedly made by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, who had reportedly pledged to give each player KSh100,000 for winning the tournament.

The rugby legend jokingly suggested that the money would have accumulated significant interest if it had been placed in a savings account at the time.

"Eiii 🤣🤣🤣 wacha Tu nicheke," he wrote, before adding that the money could have earned considerable interest over the years.

His remarks have revived discussions about how Kenyan athletes are rewarded after delivering major international achievements. The 2016 Singapore Sevens triumph remains one of the most memorable moments in the country's rugby history, but Injera's comments suggest that some of the rewards announced at the time were never received by the players.
