Several people, including two Kariobangi Sharks players, have been arrested following the assault of referee John Sulwe during the club's FKF Premier League playoff second-leg encounter against Mombasa United.
The players, Eustas Chesara and Patillah Omoto, were reportedly picked up by police on the morning of Thursday, November 5, while attending a training session with their teammates.
Their arrests come days after chaotic scenes marred the highly contested playoff encounter, which ended prematurely following an alleged attack on the match official.
Sulwe was reportedly assaulted during the match, forcing the game to be abandoned as tensions escalated on the pitch.
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) is understood to have initiated the process that eventually led to the arrests, as investigations into the incident continue.
The development marks a major turn in the controversy surrounding the decisive playoff fixture, which was supposed to determine the team that would secure promotion to the country's top-flight league.
Following the abandonment of the match, FKF awarded Mombasa United two goals and three points, a decision that handed the coastal-based club qualification to the FKF Premier League.
The ruling was a significant setback for Kariobangi Sharks, who had hoped to secure their place in the top tier through the playoff contest.
The arrests of Chesara, Omoto and other individuals are expected to bring further attention to the circumstances surrounding the incident, particularly the alleged involvement of players in the assault of the referee.
