Attitude over trophies: Messi reflects on the legacy he wants to be remembered for and life regrets

Soccer icon Lionel Messi has revealed the legacy he hopes to leave long after he finally steps away from the game.

The Argentine recently announced his retirement from international football, and remarkably, for a man who dedicated his childhood, teenage years, and nearly his entire adult life to becoming the greatest player in history, he made no mention of his titles, records, or personal accolades.

Over a storied two-decade career, the Argentine has won every trophy available, capturing the admiration and mesmerising millions across Europe and the world stage.

To many fans, his genius on the pitch transformed him into something transcendent—an athlete reverently described as “god-like.”

Yet, despite reaching the absolute pinnacle of sport and enjoying the immense fame and fortune that came with it, the Inter Miami star remains remarkably grounded. When reflecting on how he wants to be remembered, Messi emphasised his work ethic and demeanor on the pitch rather than his individual glory:

“Beyond the titles and what I was able to achieve on the field, I want to be remembered as a good person—someone who always gave everything on the pitch and led by example through dedication and respect,” he said.

This humble mindset was forged during his early years. At just 13 years old, Messi left his hometown of Rosario, Argentina, relocating to Spain alongside his late father Jorge Messi. Driven by an intense desire to succeed in a new country, he entered Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy.

During those formative years, his focus on training, self-improvement, and chasing his footballing dreams was absolute. In fact, he was so consumed by the game during his youth that he admits he did not fully appreciate broader life skills at the time—such as learning a second language—because every ounce of his energy was poured into making it to the top.

“I didn’t do it, and I regret it a lot. I had the time to have at least studied English (when I was a boy). I had situations where I was with incredible personalities… To be able to talk and have a chat and feel half ignorant. I always thought, “What an idiot, how I wasted my time,” he said.

“And perhaps the most beautiful part is what he says about his children. Today that is what I tell my children: having a good education… to study and be prepared.”

In an era often dominated by individual ego, Messi’s true legacy may not just be the glittering trophies but the humility, focus, and quiet passion that defined his journey.
