If anybody is going to take points off Manchester City, Unai Emery might be the man to do it. Enzo Maresca’s leaders travel to Villa Park on Saturday lunchtime with a perfect Premier League record, but they face a Villa side that hasn’t lost in seven games and has made a habit of beating City in B6.
City’s start to the season has been historic. Seven wins from seven have made them only the third team in Premier League history to win their first seven games of a season, after Chelsea in 2005-06 and Liverpool in 2019-20, and Maresca is the first manager ever to win his first seven games in charge of a club in the division. Chelsea went on to win nine in a row that season, and Liverpool eight.
They warmed up for this trip by thrashing AEK Athens 5-1 in the Champions League on Tuesday. Phil Foden scored a hat-trick, and Elliot Anderson scored his first goal for the club, pouncing on the rebound after Enzo Fernández’s free-kick hit the crossbar.
Villa are flying too. Their Champions League campaign is now three wins from three after a 3-1 victory over Viking on Wednesday, following wins at Club Brugge and against Fenerbahçe. They also won 1-0 at Newcastle last weekend, a result Tyrone Mings described as a sign that Villa are “slowly grinding towards cohesion”.
History is on Villa’s side too. They have won the last three meetings with City at Villa Park, and they did the double over City last season.

Emery’s left-back problems continue. Aaron Wan-Bissaka has a thigh injury that could keep him out for up to a month, and Matteo Ruggeri remains sidelined. Ian Maatsen returned from injury to make the bench on Wednesday, so Emery has to decide whether he is ready to start.
Emery is hopeful on Johan Manzambi, who has been carrying a knock, and Taylor Harwood-Bellis has been added to Villa’s Champions League squad to cover the injuries in defence.
For City, Maresca confirmed that Erling Haaland is “100% available” after being rested against AEK. Josko Gvardiol is also fit despite a minor back problem before the AEK game.
The bad news for City is Antoine Semenyo, who is expected to be out until the middle of December with a knee injury picked up against Ipswich. Maresca is also waiting on Nico O’Reilly, Mateo Kovačić and Matheus Nunes, all of whom face late fitness tests.

Unai Emery and Villa have had plenty of success against City in recent years but it’s nigh-on impossible to back against the Premier League leaders at the minute. They seemed galvanised by recent off-field issues and with Phil Foden returning to top form, that gives them another option in an already formidable attacking arsenal.
