Kenyan Baseball5 sensation Brighton Kelly believes his decision to stick with the lesser-known sport has been completely vindicated after inspiring his national team to a historic run at the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar.

The budding athlete played a pivotal role as Kenya edged out world number three France on the opening day of the Baseball5 tournament on Friday, October 30, inspiring a dramatic comeback that delivered Kenya’s maiden victory on the global Olympic stage.

Kelly first picked up the sport as a primary school student in Grade 5 following encouragement from his teacher. After his coach told him the discipline could take him places, he made up his mind that the dream was worth chasing.

While some of his peers drifted away as the opportunity seemed distant, Kelly kept training tirelessly.

On Friday, at the Complexe Tour de l’Œuf in Dakar, that persistence paid off on the biggest stage.

“I kept training. I kept my hope that I would play in the Olympic Games, and now I’m here,” Kelly told WBSC.

The thrilling start did not stop there. The Joel Wangicho-led squad built on their opening triumph to defeat world number five Mexico on Saturday, securing back-to-back victories and locking in a historic semifinal berth. Kenya now heads into their final Group A fixture against Syria holding momentum and a guaranteed spot in the final four.

Speaking on his goals in Dakar, Kelly—who is the third youngest player in the entire Youth Olympic Games Baseball5 competition at just 14 years, 8 months, and 16 days—emphasized that the squad has its sights set on the top prize.

“That is my dream: that I can take a medal back home,” he said.

A nation’s elation

Speaking on the dream start, 14-year-old team captain Shantel Lucianah, the youngest player on the squad, praised her team’s resilience after the high-stakes win, reiterating their ambitious target of reaching the podium.

“I am thrilled to lead the team to victory as captain. It was a tough and challenging game that required courage and endurance. We are relishing our chances, targeting the medals, and determined to represent our nation to the best of our ability,” Lucianah stated.

With two wins from two, Kenya will look to extend their unbeaten run when they take on Syria on Sunday, November 1.
