Mbappé Breaks Silence After Harry Kane Beating Him in Ballon d’Or as Real Madrid Star Eyes Future Glory

Kylian Mbappé has acknowledged Harry Kane’s credentials as a worthy Ballon d’Or winner after the Bayern Munich striker beat him and Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal to the prestigious individual award at the 2026 ceremony in London.

Kane was crowned the best men's footballer in the world on Monday, October 26, following a remarkable season in which he scored 73 goals for club and country and helped Bayern Munich secure a domestic treble.

Mbappé finished second in the voting, while Yamal claimed third place and won the Men's Young Talent of the Year award for the third consecutive year.

The result marked a significant moment for Kane, who became the first Englishman to win the men's Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen in 2001.

Before the ceremony, Mbappé had already expressed his respect for the England captain, insisting that Kane would deserve the award if he emerged victorious.

“He deserves it; he’s a great player. People came to see great players, and he’s one of them,” Mbappé said, according to Athlon Sports.

The French forward also addressed the possibility of Kane winning the award, reportedly telling L’Équipe:

“If Kane wins the award? It would be well deserved.”

Those comments demonstrated Mbappé’s recognition of Kane’s achievements ahead of the ceremony, even as both players competed for football’s biggest individual honour.

Viral statement claims Mbappé was happy for Kane

Following the ceremony, a lengthy statement circulated on social media, allegedly attributed to Mbappé, claiming that the Real Madrid forward was pleased to see Kane win despite his own disappointment.

The statement portrayed Mbappé as respecting Kane’s career while remaining determined to win the Ballon d’Or himself.

In the circulating statement, Mbappé was quoted as saying:

“Honestly, if I had to choose between Harry Kane and Lamine Yamal winning it ahead of me, I would rather see Harry win it.

“Not because I have anything against Lamine. He is a fantastic player, and I respect what he has achieved. But Harry represents something I deeply respect about football. He has worked for years, carried enormous expectations and continued to deliver at the highest level.

“Seeing him lift that trophy made me happy. I was proud of him, genuinely. But let me be clear: I didn’t travel to that ceremony to support Harry Kane. I went there because I wanted to win the Ballon d’Or myself.”

The same statement continued by addressing the difference between respecting a winner and accepting defeat.

“People might look at my reaction and say, ‘Mbappé should be grateful to be nominated.’ Of course I’m grateful. But I didn’t reach this level by being satisfied with nominations.

“I want to win. I want to be the best. And when I lose, I don’t suddenly pretend that winning was never important to me.

“I would rather lose the Ballon d’Or to a player I respect than win the sympathy of people who tell me I deserved it after the ceremony.”

These longer remarks have not been independently verified as authentic Mbappé quotations. They should be treated as an unconfirmed social-media statement rather than a confirmed post-ceremony interview.

Kane’s historic triumph

Kane’s victory followed an exceptional 2025/26 campaign in which he established himself as one of the most prolific forwards in European football.

The Bayern Munich striker scored 73 goals across club and international football, helped his club win the Bundesliga, German Cup and German Super Cup, and continued to deliver consistently for England.

His achievements placed him ahead of a strong field that included Mbappé, Yamal and several other established stars.

For Kane, the award represented recognition for years of consistency and his transformation into one of the defining strikers of his generation.

Mbappé, meanwhile, remains one of the most accomplished forwards in world football. His second-place finish confirms his position among the leading contenders for the award, although the Ballon d’Or continues to elude him.

Mbappé’s pursuit of the Ballon d’Or continues

The circulating statement also attributed a determined message to the French forward, suggesting he intends to return stronger rather than complain about the result.

“Harry had his night, and I respect that. But my story isn’t finished. If working harder, scoring more goals, improving my game and taking greater responsibility are what it takes, then that is exactly what I will do.

“I won’t ask anyone to feel sorry for me. I won’t complain about the result. I will go back to work.

“Because the next time I walk into that ceremony, I don’t want to sit there wondering whose name they are going to announce.

“I want to hear my own name and I want nobody to have an argument about whether I deserve it.”

Although the authenticity of these remarks remains unconfirmed, they reflect the competitive narrative surrounding Mbappé’s continued pursuit of football’s most prestigious individual award.

With Kane now holding the trophy and Yamal continuing to establish himself among the world's leading young players, the battle for future Ballon d’Or honours is likely to remain a major talking point.

For Mbappé, the immediate challenge will be to maintain his extraordinary scoring standards, compete for major team honours and strengthen his case for future individual recognition.

Kane has enjoyed his moment in the spotlight. Mbappé’s own pursuit of the award, however, remains an unfinished chapter.
