Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany was taken to a hospital in Munich on Friday, October 23, 2026 after collapsing at the club’s Säbener Straße training ground, according to BILD and Sky Sport.
The 40-year-old Belgian reportedly became unwell after a training session, prompting an emergency doctor to attend the scene. He was subsequently taken to a local hospital for medical attention.
The incident came after Kompany had been struggling with a viral infection that affected his ability to carry out his usual duties in recent days.
The illness forced him to miss training sessions and a press conference ahead of Bayern’s UEFA Champions League match against Arsenal.
His assistant coach, Aaron Danks, represented him at the pre-match press conference and emphasised the importance of allowing the Belgian coach to rest.
“It’s very important that he rests,” Danks said, adding that Kompany had experienced pain in his legs.
Despite the illness, Kompany returned to the touchline for Wednesday’s Champions League encounter against Arsenal, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
After the match, the former Manchester City defender acknowledged that he had pushed himself too hard while unwell.
“As a coach, you always want to do everything. I caught a pretty nasty virus last week, then of course I didn’t listen to my body, and eventually my body said: Now stop!” he said.
Reports of Kompany’s hospitalisation emerged as Bayern prepared for their Bundesliga away fixture against SC Freiburg on Sunday, October 25.
His availability for the match remained uncertain, with further information expected from the club.
Kompany took charge of Bayern in 2024 and guided the German giants to the Bundesliga title in his first season. He later extended his contract through 2029.
Assistant coach Danks has previously stepped in to handle media duties during Kompany’s absences.
Bayern supporters will be awaiting an official update on the coach’s condition and whether he will be available for the weekend fixture.
