For years, football in Embu has revolved around grassroots tournaments and school games, with the larger Mount Kenya region having little to boast of in terms of sports culture and prowess—apart from occasional flashpoints of brilliance, such as All Saints’ national rugby triumph, among others.

However, the script is fast changing, with two teams from the populous region now plying their trade in Kenya’s top flight.

Murang’a Seal, based at Murang’a’s San Sebastian Park, fought its way through the nationwide ranks and lower tiers to punch its place in top-flight football, recording top-ten finishes over the last three years.

Years down the line, another team has announced its arrival in the top league, comically adopting the moniker “freshers.” You cannot help but keep tabs on this emerging new force, at least off the pitch for the moment.

A change of guard occurred after the club suspended head coach Francis Chege following a difficult start to the year. Entrusting the job to former Fortune Sacco coaches proved to be a masterclass move.

The new technical bench led the team on a 10-game unbeaten run, seeing them finish as runners-up in the National Super League (NSL) and earning them direct promotion to the FKF Premier League.

Owned by Eastern Region NEC Member and Embu Branch FKF official Charles Njoka Njagi, the club operates as a community-rooted team representing neighbouring villages in Embu County.

Unifying force

Moving past village tournaments and school games, the rise of this new club has become a key factor in pulling the region together, using football as a unifying force.

Now coached by Nicodemus Omasete alongside former decorated KPL midfielder Denis “Wise” Okoth and Moses Munene, the team brings more than just football to the top flight, bringing a carnival mood, fan energy, and vibes that only a few clubs like Gor Mahia, Shabana, and AFC Leopards have been able to sustain through a dynamic fanbase.

Now competing among the Premier League big boys, the Embu-based club is not resting when it comes to exploiting matchday hype and football fanfare.

The team may be a new force in the league, but they have certainly carved out a niche in hyping big games. Beyond domestic rivalries borrowed from the eternal Mashemeji derby between AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia, or the captivating Swahili-themed banter of Bandari, 3K FC has brought a fresh dimension to pre-match buildup.

Ahead of their clash against Murang’a Seal, both sides billed the fixture as the battle for the ultimate ‘King of the Mountain’. Beyond the banter, the pre-match hype worked like a charm; fans did not disappoint, turning out in huge numbers for the first-ever top-league meeting against the traditional nemesis.

That boiling new beef with Murang’a was taken a notch higher after 3K FC secured their maiden league win at the Embu Stadium a couple of weeks ago. They defeated their Mount Kenya rivals in the highly billed “Murima Derby”—an intense encounter filled with banter that promises to be the start of a great regional rivalry.

Following their Week 5 win against Posta Rangers, the club could not help but rub salt in the Mailmen’s wounds with their witty online banter.

Freshers’ breath of fresh air

While results on the pitch are still taking shape, the club’s online presence, emerging football prowess, and infectious vibes provide the exact visibility the local league needs to become more appealing and a force to be reckoned with.

Though it is still early days in the campaign, these boisterous newcomers—the self-proclaimed “freshers” of Kenya’s top league—have arrived as a breath of fresh air. They are certainly holding up a light for league mainstays on how to generate buzz, build matchday atmosphere, and turn games into major events.
