Manchester United are exploring a stunning January raid on local rivals Manchester City for left-back Rayan Aït-Nouri, as the Red Devils intensify their hunt for a long-term solution in defence.
The Algeria international has endured a miserable campaign at the Etihad Stadium, featuring just four times across all competitions and failing to make a single Premier League appearance.
With first-team football proving elusive under manager Enzo Maresca, the 25-year-old now appears ready to force a winter exit.
United’s interest adds extra spice given the fierce rivalry between the two clubs. The Red Devils ultimately need to replace Luke Shaw, whose persistent injury problems have left the left-back position dangerously exposed.
According to reports, United previously rejected the chance to sign Aït-Nouri during the summer. City were willing to discuss a loan deal with an obligation to buy, but United balked at those terms.
The landscape has shifted dramatically since then, with Aït-Nouri increasingly open to leaving due to his lack of minutes.
United have also monitored Newcastle’s Lewis Hall, Bournemouth’s Adrien Truffert and Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde as alternative long-term options.
However, Aït-Nouri offers a compelling opportunity if the price makes sense. He brings substantial Premier League experience from his Wolves days, operates comfortably as either a left-back or wing-back, and at 25 should still have his best years ahead.
Sources close to the player have made his frustration clear, claiming his “talent is being wasted” at City.
The obvious hurdle remains convincing City to strengthen their cross-town rivals. Such transfers are rare and would inevitably generate headlines. Yet United desperately need competition and durability on the left flank.
If Aït-Nouri genuinely becomes available in January, ignoring the opportunity purely because of his current employer would make little sense.
