Maresca insists no Man City player is undroppable after Donnarumma’s Villa horror show

Maresca said his XI for City's league game with Brighton would be "Gigio plus 10".

Enzo Maresca has made it clear no members of his Manchester City side are undroppable despite a public show of support for goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Donnarumma was culpable for both goals as City lost 2-1 to Aston Villa last Saturday, and was subsequently rested as Maresca’s men beat Brighton and Hove Albion in a penalty shootout to progress to the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup.

Gerónimo Rulli made two penalty saves to help secure City’s progression, but Maresca confirmed immediately thereafter that the team for Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Brighton would be “Gigio plus 10”.

Pressed on those comments in his pre-match press conference, Maresca said: “I think it is one thing to say that at his moment it is Gigio plus 10, and another thing to say he is undroppable.

“They are two different things. There is no player who is undroppable but there is a moment where it is Gigio plus ten because in this moment I see it like this.

“Any player makes mistakes, [what is] important is to move on, understand the reason why, to learn from that mistake and move on. In this moment we are talking about Gigio but remember the last minutes the save at Manchester United away.

“All players make mistakes at some point of the season, sometimes it costs points and sometimes not because we are lucky but I think it’s a normal process from Gigio.”

Maresca confirmed that Antoine Semenyo is the only City player unavailable for the game as he continues his rehabilitation from a knee injury.

“They are all available,” he said at his press conference “[Apart from] Antoine Semenyo, the rest are all available.”

“He’s [Semenyo] good. He’s in a good mood. He’s in the building making the recovery sessions and the therapy that he needs but it’s too early for now.”
