Lazio ‘might get dizzy’ if they focus on Serie A table, says Gattuso

Gennaro Gattuso remained focused on reaching 40 points in Serie A this season while also urging his Lazio team not to look at the table to avoid feeling "dizzy".

Lazio are at the summit of Serie A after at least ten games played for the first time since 2010-11 after coming from behind to beat Cagliari 2-1 at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday.

M'Bala Nzola had given Cagliari a 20th-minute lead, but a brilliant strike from Gustav Isaksen nine minutes before half-time ensured Lazio went in level at the break.

It appeared as though Lazio had failed to fully capitalise on Inter's Derby della Madonnina loss to AC Milan 24 hours earlier, but Andrea Pinamonti came off the bench to head in the winner in the 83rd minute.

Lazio have now won six consecutive Serie A games for the first time since a run between January and February 2021, under Simone Inzaghi.

They have also scored at least 24 goals in their first 10 Serie A matches of a season for the first time since 2017-18 (26 goals), though Gattuso warned his team that there are plenty of challenges awaiting them throughout the season.

"We are all up there, we still need 12 points to achieve the target of 40 that we set at the start of the season," Gattuso told DAZN Italia, as quoted by Football Italia.

"Every team in the league is balanced and well-structured, so we've got to keep taking it one game at a time and see where we end up.

"It is best that we don't look at the table right now, or it'll make us dizzy. We've got to push hard, rest, then push hard again."

Cagliari have now registered four consecutive defeats in Serie A for the first time since between March and April 2026, though they caused Lazio a lot of problems.

Lazio just edged the expected goals (xG) battle, registering a total of 1.02 from their 11 attempts to Cagliari's total of 0.99 from their nine shots.

Gattuso's side, along with Roma, remain the only teams yet to taste defeat in Serie A this season, though Gian Piero Gasperini's side are four points behind them in the table.

Lazio face an out-of-form Napoli side in their next league match before the international break, but Gattuso said there was still room for improvement from his side, saying once their belief and determination drops, they become a "normal team".

"That defeat didn't take away our belief in what we were doing, we don't let go," Gattuso added.

"We work, we don't complain, this is the spirit that is pushing us on, because without that, we become a normal team.

"It was a very difficult match and all credit for that goes to Cagliari, because we struggled and those who came off the bench changed the game with their mentality.

"This was a very important match for us, we did everything to take the result home. Cagliari are tough to deal with, they defend and attack well."
