Mikel Arteta pointed to a costly lack of clinical finishing after English champions Arsenal suffered a stunning League Cup exit at the hands of a League Two outfit on October 27, 2026.
Despite fighting back with ten men at Highbury Stadium to force a 1-1 draw through Viktor Gyokeres’s first goal of the season, the Gunners were ultimately ousted 5-3 on penalties, ending their pursuit of early domestic silverware.
Speaking after the match, Arteta praised his squad’s application but pulled no punches regarding their proficiency in front of goal:
“There is nothing to criticise the players for in terms of their attitude, their application, or their determination to play the game we had to play. But obviously, we conceded a really poor goal to start with and gave them belief,” he said.
“After that, we generated a high volume of chances, shots, and clear-cut situations that we simply did not put away. If you do not capitalise at this level, there are no margins for error, you are out,” he explained.
Arsenal dominated large stretches of the match despite the late red card to Max Dowman, yet failed to convert their superiority into a decisive scoreline.
“When you play in such a dominant way, you have to give nothing to the opponent, Arteta added. When you create the volume of chances we did, you have to score three, four, or five. That is the reality. Still, with low probability, there is always a chance you can be knocked out of the cup if you leave the door open.”
Arsenal must now quickly regroup as they enter a demanding stretch of three consecutive away fixtures, starting with a blockbuster Premier League clash against Liverpool at Anfield this Sunday. November 1, 2026.
Addressing the travelling supporters who made the journey to Lancashire, Arteta expressed his gratitude and turned his focus toward the Sunday match:
The fans are always with us; that is unquestionable. After the game, they showed their appreciation to the team, and now we will try to make them very happy,” he added.
Arsenal lost 0–2 to Manchester City in the competition’s final, played at Wembley Stadium on March 22, 2026.
