Mombasa United CEO Nick Arunga has confirmed that businessman Suleiman Shahbal is no longer the club’s lead sponsor following their promotion to the Kenya Premier League (KPL).
Shahbal supported the coastal outfit for two seasons in the National Super League (NSL), but the financial demands of competing in the top flight have complicated efforts to maintain the sponsorship arrangement.
Speaking on the development, Arunga acknowledged Shahbal’s contribution to the club, noting that sponsorship requirements in the top tier are significantly higher than those in the second division.
“This season, we are not with Hon. Suleiman Shahbal as our lead sponsor. He supported us for two seasons in the National Super League, and, as you know, sponsorship in the NSL and the Kenya Premier League is different, with higher financial demands. We are grateful for the tremendous support he gave the club,” said Arunga.
The Mombasa United CEO revealed that Shahbal had expressed interest in continuing to support the club after promotion, but the financial package required to become the team’s shirt sponsor proved to be a stumbling block.
“Now that we are in the KPL, Shahbal wanted to continue as our lead sponsor. However, according to our new sponsorship packages and resolutions for this season, there was a budget requirement for anyone who wanted to have their name on the shirt as a sponsor, and it did not sit well with him,” Arunga added.
Despite the setback, Arunga confirmed that the club is in advanced negotiations with potential sponsors as it seeks to strengthen its financial position.
“We have had an opportunity to engage with other people interested in coming on board as sponsors, and I can confirm that we are in the final stages of negotiations,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mombasa United are preparing for their third league fixture of the season against Police FC, scheduled for Sunday at Mbaraki Sports Club in Mombasa.
The newly promoted side will be seeking its first win of the campaign after suffering defeats in its opening two matches, as it looks to get its season back on track.
