Mohamed Salah overtook Manchester City striker Erling Haaland in European competition goals after inspiring Trabzonspor to a 2-0 victory over Hearts in the UEFA Conference League on Thursday night, October 22, 2026.
The Egyptian forward scored from the penalty spot before providing an assist for Franculino Dju as the Turkish side secured three points against an injury-hit Hearts team. The victory lifted Trabzonspor to third place in the league phase standings.
Salah’s goal took his European tally to 66, one more than Haaland’s 65, underlining the former Liverpool star’s continued scoring prowess since moving to Turkey.
The 34-year-old calmly converted his first-half spot-kick before turning provider for Dju, who produced an impressive finish into the far corner to double the hosts’ advantage.
Salah has scored 54 times in the UEFA Champions League during spells with Liverpool, Roma and Basel. He has also found the net 10 times in the Europa League and twice in the Conference League.
Haaland, meanwhile, has registered 61 Champions League goals in 60 appearances for Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund and Red Bull Salzburg. The Norwegian has also scored four times in five Europa League outings for Molde.
Despite being only 26, Haaland is already seventh on the Champions League’s all-time scoring list.
Salah’s contribution against Hearts extended beyond his goal, with the forward setting up Dju for a superb second-half finish.
The Egyptian has now recorded 33 assists in European competitions, further demonstrating his ability to influence matches as both a scorer and creator.
Reacting to the second goal, TNT Sports pundit Michael Stewart said: “That’s a phenomenal goal, it really is.”
He added: “It’s a touch of class from Franculino Dju and Mo Salah.”
Salah has made an impressive start to life at Trabzonspor after joining the Turkish club on a free transfer following nine successful years at Liverpool, where he collected several major honours.
His arrival generated considerable excitement among supporters, and his performances have so far justified the expectations surrounding the move.
The former Liverpool talisman has also made a strong impact in the Turkish Super Lig, where he tops the scoring standings with eight goals.
He found the net in Trabzonspor’s 2-0 victory over Besiktas on Monday, moving ahead of Gift Orban of Amedspor, Vedat Muriqi of Fenerbahce and Basaksehir’s Eldor Shomurodov. The three players are tied on seven goals each.
Salah’s goals have helped Trabzonspor establish themselves among the leading teams in the Turkish top flight. The club sit fourth in the standings, three points behind leaders Galatasaray.
The forward remains one of Liverpool’s most celebrated players, having scored 257 goals in 442 appearances for the Merseyside club before beginning his new chapter in Turkey.
