Kenya’s Junior Lionesses fought a valiant battle but ultimately settled for second place in their Youth Olympic Games pool following a tough 17-5 loss to Australia.
Despite the defeat, the Kenyan side had done enough to qualify for the tournament semi-finals, keeping their hopes of a podium finish alive.
The Lionesses were quick off the blocks, needing only one minute to get to the scoresheet. Their characteristic intensity was on full display as Josphine Kerubo scored a try to give Kenya a lead.
Kenya’s lead was short-lived, however. Australia leveled the scores just a minute later. Aime Henry landed a clinical try, which she converted herself for a 7-5 lead at halftime.
The second half saw Grace Buchanan stretch the lead for the Australians. After scoring a try to make it 12-5, Billie Backus missed the conversion, keeping the Lionesses within striking distance.
As Kenya pushed for an equalizer, space opened up. Keira Callaghan dived at the left corner for the final try, securing Australia’s victory and topping the pool.
They now prepare for a high-stakes semi-final showdown, where their passion and grit will be tested again on the global stage.
