Victor Wanyama eyes new football chapter after completing prestigious FIFA Executive Programme

Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama has taken another significant step in his football career, this time preparing for life beyond the playing field after successfully completing FIFA’s prestigious Players Executive Programme.

The Kenyan football icon announced the achievement through his social media platforms, expressing pride in reaching another milestone in his journey while highlighting his desire to continue learning, growing and contributing to the beautiful game in a different capacity.

“Proud to have completed the FIFA Players Executive Programme. Another milestone in my journey of learning, growth and leadership beyond football,” Wanyama shared.

The achievement could mark the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, who has enjoyed an illustrious playing career spanning several countries and some of Europe’s biggest football stages.

Wanyama’s decision to pursue further education in football management demonstrates his ambition to remain involved in the sport even as he looks towards opportunities outside active football.

The 18-month FIFA Players Executive Programme is designed to prepare current and former professional footballers, as well as coaches, for leadership and administrative responsibilities within the football industry.

Unlike the traditional coaching pathway, which focuses mainly on technical and tactical aspects of the game, the programme provides participants with knowledge of how football organisations are managed and the decisions that influence their long-term development.

Among the areas covered are football administration, leadership, financial planning, youth development and strategic management. Participants also receive training in personal branding, crisis communication, mental and physical wellbeing, and philanthropy.

The programme further features specialised financial planning sessions delivered in collaboration with the London School of Economics and Political Science, giving participants a better understanding of the financial responsibilities that come with managing football institutions.

Through a combination of virtual learning, interactive sessions, presentations and engagements with established football organisations, the programme exposes participants to the realities of football management.

For Wanyama, the experience provides an opportunity to build on the knowledge and understanding he has acquired during years of playing professional football.

The former Celtic and Southampton midfielder made history as one of Kenya’s most successful football exports, becoming the first Kenyan to score in the UEFA Champions League when he found the net for Celtic against Barcelona in November 2012.

He later moved to Southampton before joining Tottenham Hotspur, where he reached the 2019 UEFA Champions League final. His experience at the highest level of the game gives him valuable insight into the challenges and opportunities facing modern football.

At international level, Wanyama captained Harambee Stars and played a key role in Kenya’s return to the Africa Cup of Nations in 2019 after a 15-year absence.

His latest achievement could therefore open another avenue through which he can contribute to Kenyan football and the wider African game.

With football increasingly requiring individuals who understand both what happens on the pitch and the business behind it, Wanyama’s decision to invest in his education is a positive development.

Although he has not announced his next move in football administration, completing the FIFA programme places him in a better position to explore leadership opportunities within clubs, football associations and other sporting institutions.

For a player who spent years representing Kenya on the international stage, the possibility of contributing to the sport from the boardroom presents an interesting prospect.

Wanyama may have achieved plenty during his playing days, but his latest milestone suggests that his football journey is far from over.
