The Houston Astros' 2026 season may not have gone as expected, despite making the playoffs and winning the AL West with an 81-81 record. While the franchise didn't get beyond the first round, there were players who performed well all season to get the club in that position in the first place.
Houston's veteran first baseman, Christian Walker, was one of the reasons for the Astros' success, both with his power at the plate and his defensive prowess in the field. In his second season with the franchise, Walker can now add another award to his trophy case as of Sunday night.
As announced, Walker has won the American League Gold Glove Award among first basemen, defeating Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of the Toronto Blue Jays and Vinnie Pasquantino of the Kansas City Royals. It's Walker's fourth Gold Glove Award and his first in the American League.
With his win, he becomes the Astros' first Gold Glove first baseman since Yuli Gurriel won the award back in 2021.
Walker won three consecutive Gold Glove Awards with the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2022 to 2024, which was a reason why the Astros signed him in free agency after the 2024 season.
Now, Walker heads into 2027 with a question mark over his future, as he could become a trade candidate for the front office. The fourth Gold Glove should only make him more desirable on the trade market if Houston looks to shed his salary ($20 million in 2027).
Looking at Walker's Baseball Savant page, it's undeniable that he was one of the best first basemen in the AL, but also across Major League Baseball, posting a fielding run value of 7, ranking second in the American League and fifth across the league.
Guerrero Jr. posted a fielding run value of six, but Toronto's slugger did best Walker in range with a 4 compared to Walker's 2.
What makes a Gold Glove fielder is more than their statistics; it's also factored in how often they're on the field. Walker played 1,330 innings at first base this season, which was more than both Guerrero (1,095) and Pasquantino (943).
To determine the award winners, 30 managers and up to six coaches from each team vote from a pool of players in their league, excluding players from their own team. Walker's impressive statistics earned him another accolade, backing up Houston's decision to sign him two years ago.
