Coco Gauff defeated Venus Williams on her Wimbledon debut

If you ever wonder what really makes up a dream debut, you should look at the one Coco Gauff had at Wimbledon in 2019. Let’s turn back the time and revisit the day when a 15-year-old girl stunned the tennis world by defeating 23-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams in the first round of Wimbledon.

On that day, Gauff defeated the legend whom she grew up admiring. Venus and her sister Serena Williams have been two major inspirations for the American teen prodigy who picked up a tennis racket for the first time at the age of 6.

It was a sure-shot display of poise and power by Gauff, who was already the youngest competitor ever to qualify at the All England Club in the professional era. She pulled off a 6-4, 6-4 victory.

Gauff was born in 2004. By that time, Venus had already spent time at No. 1 in the ranking and owned four of her seven Grand Slam singles trophies. Gauff was granted a wild card by the All England Club for qualifying. She knocked off those rounds at a nearby site and eventually went on to stun the event's top seed.

Coco Gauff’s Grand Slam records

A victory against Venus Williams was just a start for the massive journey that followed. She kept growing from strength to strength. In 2020, Gauff again hogged all the lime light when she reached the fourth round of the Australian Open, defeating defending champion Naomi Osaka. In the same year, she built on her success and advanced to the third round of the US Open while steadily climbing the WTA rankings.

Next year, she continued her momentum, showcasing her versatility by reaching the French Open semifinals in singles and finals in doubles. Later, she also went on to claim her second WTA singles title at the Parma Open. The string of achievements helped her attain her career-high rankings in both disciplines.

In 2022, she took giant strides on the grand stage when she reached her first Grand Slam singles final at Roland Garros. In that tournament, she finished as runner-up to Iga Świątek. Her dream run continued that year as she later advanced to the semifinals at the US Open.

It was in 2023 that Gauff achieved a major milestone. She took home her first ever Grand Slam singles title at the US Open. She defeated Aryna Sabalenka to become the youngest American woman to win the tournament since Serena Williams in 1999. She has won three Grand Slam titles to date. They include the French Open women’s doubles title in 2024 and the singles title in 2025.
