BYU was facing third-and-goal from Utah's 2-yard line with only 4:39 left in the fourth quarter, trailing 28-20.
Quarterback Bear Bachmeier and the Cougars, needing a touchdown and a two-point conversion to tie their archrival on Saturday, Nov. 7, made a crucial mistake that might've been the difference in the game, even with all the other errors on offense.
Bachmeier had an open receiver in the end zone but his pass was jumped and intercepted by Trey Reynolds, which all but sealed the Utes' 28-20 win. The play encapsulated the up-and-down day for Bachmeier, who tossed four interceptions in the one-score loss.
The second-year quarterback completed 21 of 35 passes for 272 yards with a touchdown to four interceptions against the No. 4 Utes while rushing for 59 yards on eight carries. His second-half performance might've been the worst of his career thus far.
Utah jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter before BYU scored 20 unanswered points, taking a 20-14 lead into halftime. BYU was held scoreless in the second half, with its five drives during the third and fourth quarters ending with an interception, two punts and two more interceptions, respectively.
The Utes lost a pair of fumbles in the game but still won the turnover battle 4-2 over the Cougars.
BYU is now in a tough spot when it comes to earning a College Football Playoff berth this season, suffering its second loss of the year, both of which have come during conference play. BYU has a signature win against Notre Dame, but it's no sure thing for a Big 12 title game berth, which would likely be a necessary game it needs to win with two losses already.
The loss isn't solely on Bachmeier, with running backs LJ Martin and Sione Moa being held to 56 combined rushing yards on 17 carries. It's certainly a performance he'll want back, though.
