Report: Giants likely to add a running back before trade deadline

The New York Giants appear intent on addressing their underperforming running back room before the NFL trade deadline on November 10, reports SNY's Connor Hughes.

The team's ground game has struggled through the first six weeks, ranking 22nd in the NFL with a 3.8 yards-per-carry average, and no back has emerged as a clear lead option under head coach John Harbaugh.

Skattebo is a nice complement to a bellcow. The player you bring in for a physical change-of-pace. He is not a No. 1 back. He should not be getting 20-plus carries again. He’s not quick, has little burst, lacks elite athleticism, and runs into contact.

The Giants will likely try to add to the running back room before the trade deadline. It’s just a matter of if they can do anything – I have my doubts. Skattebo should leave that house, but once out of it, I’m not sure the Giants hand him the role he was enjoying pre-benching.

Cam Skattebo opened the season as the primary back but has dealt with ball-security issues, including four fumbles. He saw his role reduced significantly in the Week 6 loss to the New Orleans Saints, where he recorded zero carries after playing a limited number of snaps.

Harbaugh has made clear that none of the backs have done enough to seize a feature role, noting that the run game has yet to earn a Derrick Henry- or Saquon Barkley-type circumstance.

The situation shifted further earlier this week when the Giants released veteran Najee Harris after he questioned the four-back rotation used against the Saints. Harris finished with 99 rushing yards on 31 carries in five games. The remaining options are Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy Jr., and Devin Singletary.

Speculation has centered on potential additions such as Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor. Wink Martindale suggested the Giants should pursue Taylor, citing their opportunity to contend in the NFC East.

Taylor has posted strong production this season, and the Colts’ 2-4 start has fueled trade rumors.

Whether New York can land a difference-maker remains uncertain given draft capital considerations and the cost of established backs.
