Miami's offense was difference in win over North Carolina

The North Carolina Tar Heels' defense, once the strength of their 2026 football team, is now a glaring question mark heading into November.

UNC allowed 455 yards to a 2-win Syracuse team entering their October 24 matchup, which ended in a 31-30 UNC loss. On Halloween night, top-ranked Miami (FL) torched the North Carolina (4-4, 2-3 ACC) defense for 416 yards, remaining undefeated with a 38-35 victory.

After the Tar Heels' near-upset bid, starting linebacker Peyton Seelmann briefly detailed his team's gameplan and what went wrong.

“I mean, I feel like we had a pretty good gameplan going in," Seelmann said. "I thought we executed pretty well but, their players made plays and we didn’t.”

Seelmann was arguably UNC's best player on a defense that largely struggled across 60 minutes, totaling nine tackles (two solo), a sack and two TFLs, the only player to record those latter two statistics. Seelmann was also the only North Carolina defender to record a sack against Syracuse.

Just how good was the Hurricanes' (8-0, 6-0 ACC) offense? They only punted once, when the Tar Heels' defense made their "lone" stop late in first-quarter action. Darian Mensah and Malachi Toney continued their Heisman Trophy campaigns, connecting for 75 yards and two touchdowns, while Miami star running back Mark Fletcher Jr. 86 yards and three scores.

If the Tar Heels even makes one second-half stop, we're talking about a historic upset in Kenan Stadium instead of another heartbreaking loss.

UNC hits the road to face UConn on November 7, kicking off at 12 p.m. from East Hartford. Will North Carolina's defense make enough plays to beat the Huskies (4-4), who average 437.6 yards per game?
