Sir David Beckham receives backing for Manchester United takeover

Manchester United legend Sir David Beckham has emerged as a potential future owner of the club amid growing pressure on INEOS and the Glazers.

Sir David Beckham receives backing for Manchester United takeover

Sir David Beckham remains one of Manchester United’s greatest legends, having enjoyed an extraordinary career under Sir Alex Ferguson before establishing himself as a successful football club owner.

The former England captain emerged from United’s famous Class of ’92, making 394 appearances and scoring 85 goals for the Red Devils.

He won six Premier League titles and played a crucial role in the historic 1999 Treble, delivering both corners that produced United’s dramatic Champions League final comeback against Bayern Munich.

Since leaving Old Trafford in 2003, Beckham has transformed himself into a global businessman.

He co-founded Inter Miami, helping attract Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Sergio Busquets to Major League Soccer, while also holding an ownership interest in Salford City.

Beckham was recently linked with a potential takeover of French club Nantes, although that opportunity ultimately failed to materialise.

Meanwhile, Manchester United’s ownership remains increasingly unpopular.

The Glazer family have controlled the club since 2005, with their controversial leveraged takeover leaving United burdened by substantial debt.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS assumed responsibility for football operations in 2024, but hundreds of redundancies, rising ticket prices and questionable recruitment decisions have intensified criticism.

United’s latest accounts revealed approximately £689 million in borrowings, while Michael Carrick’s side have won just two of their opening 13 competitive matches.

Former United captain Gary Neville recently demanded that the Glazers sell the club, with supporters increasingly desperate for change.

Now, another legendary former United midfielder has backed Beckham to become part of a potential takeover.

Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Paul Scholes expressed his support for a potential Beckham-led consortium purchasing Manchester United.

The former midfielder was responding to a listener who suggested Beckham could help rebuild the struggling club.

Scholes, who played alongside Beckham throughout United’s most successful era, said: “I don’t see why not.”

He explained that any potential takeover would depend on Beckham’s willingness and the financial resources available to his investors.

Scholes also criticised United’s existing ownership, declaring: “These owners haven’t worked.”

He questioned Ratcliffe’s impact after more than two years and acknowledged the longstanding hostility towards the Glazer family.

Fellow United legend Nicky Butt raised concerns about the club’s valuation, suggesting the Glazers could demand approximately £8 billion.

However, neither Beckham nor a prospective consortium has announced a formal bid, meaning Scholes’ endorsement remains hypothetical.
