Vergil Ortiz Jr. Faces Keith Thurman With Little Upside

Vergil Ortiz Jr. gives the December 5 Benavidez–Cieslak DAZN pay-per-view another fighter fans want to watch. Whether Keith Thurman gives them another fight worth buying is a harder sell.

The former unified welterweight champion brings name recognition to the Glendale, Arizona card. His victories over Shawn Porter and Danny Garcia give promoters something familiar to advertise alongside Ortiz’s knockout record. But those wins offer little evidence of what Thurman can produce against an unbeaten puncher at this stage of his career.

Thurman, 37, enters off a sixth-round stoppage loss to Sebastian Fundora in March. He has not fought since. There is no rebuilding victory between that defeat and another dangerous opponent, leaving buyers to judge his chances largely on a performance in which he was thoroughly beaten. premierboxingchampions.com

That is the weakness in presenting Ortiz–Thurman as a major reason to purchase the event. Adding recognizable fighters improves a poster. Adding uncertainty about who wins improves the argument for paying.

Thurman’s best chance would appear to involve making Ortiz work for clean openings: moving, changing direction, and landing counters before getting away. Trading with the younger fighter would invite the kind of sustained punishment Thurman needs to avoid.

Fundora and Ortiz present different challenges. Fundora’s unusual height and reach helped him control Thurman, so that defeat does not establish exactly how this fight will unfold. Ortiz, however, brings his own pressure through body punching, combinations, and the ability to punish an opponent who stays within range.

The concern is whether Thurman can maintain the movement and concentration that approach requires. Doing it for a few early rounds is one thing. Keeping Ortiz from wearing him down over 12 is another.

The announcement also lists this as a middleweight bout, despite Ortiz’s recent work at 154 pounds. That detail deserves attention, although the release does not specify the contracted weight.

For Ortiz, the clearest benefit is finally getting back into the ring after stopping Erickson Lubin in November 2025. A place beneath David Benavidez also puts him in front of an audience that could follow him into bigger fights.

“Overall I’m just happy to be active again,” Ortiz said in the announcement.

That explains accepting a fight. It does less to establish Thurman as the right opponent for a fighter who has already beaten Serhii Bohachuk, Israil Madrimov and Lubin.

Oscar De La Hoya’s sales pitch was revealing: “Keith Thurman is a crafty, experienced fighter who has been in there with the very best and will give Vergil some good rounds.”

“Good rounds” is a modest promise for a pay-per-view co-main event. It sounds like preparation for a bigger fight rather than the bigger fight itself.

Ortiz also faces an uneven reward. A quick stoppage would be expected against an older opponent coming off a stoppage defeat. A difficult night would invite unfavorable comparisons with Fundora. Thurman’s name would go onto Ortiz’s record, but beating him now would add less than beating him during his championship years. Ortiz–Thurman can contribute action, familiarity, and the possibility of another Ortiz knockout.

Some buyers will value that addition. Fans still deciding whether Benavidez–Cieslak deserves their money, however, need a stronger reason to believe the co-main event will be competitive. Thurman’s last performance makes that belief difficult to sell.
