Former Liverpool star Dirk Kuyt is in line to face the Reds next Wednesday after being named as interim boss of Fenerbahce.

Kuyt - who joined the Turkish club as a player in 2012 after six seasons at Anfield, during which he scored 71 goals in 285 appearances - has been named in temporary charge following the resignation of Ismail Kartal on Tuesday.

Kartal ended his fourth spell as Fenerbahce boss, which only began in June, after Monday's 2-1 defeat to Istanbul rivals and current Turkish league leaders Galatasaray. It was a loss which left Fener down in fifth in the table and six points off the top after three defeats from their nine matches.

Fenerbahce, whose squad boasts several former Premier League stars including Ederson, Nelson Semedo, Nathan Ake, N'Golo Kante, Matteo Guendouzi, Mason Greenwood, Marco Asensio and Romelu Lukaku, have drawn with Roma and Slavia Prague in this season's Champions League, as well as losing 6-0 at Aston Villa.

Kuyt rejoined the club as assistant boss to Kartal in June, having previously managed Feyenoord's under-19 side as well as the senior teams of ADO Den Haag, Beerschot and FC Dordrecht.

He will take charge of Fener in Saturday's home league clash with Goztepe, with reports in Turkey claiming he will remain in charge until at least the international break, taking in matches against Liverpool in Istanbul next Wednesday and a league clash at Corum a week on Sunday.

Kuyt scored 37 goals in 130 appearances in three seasons as a player for the club, winning the league title and Turkish Cup.

The Netherlands' eight-most capped player of all-time with 104 appearances, Kuyt is still highly regarded at Anfield for his wholehearted approach to the game, while he has returned to Merseyside to take part in LFC Legends events since his retirement.

Liverpool sit third in the Champions League table following three wins from three in this season's competition, with the Reds having beaten Atletico Madrid and Villarreal at Anfield won 6-3 at Austrian side LASK.
