New Zealand opener Devon Conway is in doubt for the first ODI against India and could miss more matches after suffering a head injury in a training-ground collision with Matt Henry on Tuesday. The left-handed batter was taken to hospital for further assessment after the incident during fielding practice.
The five-match ODI series begins at Eden Park in Auckland on Wednesday, November 4, before moving to Wellington on Saturday and Hamilton next Tuesday. India won the preceding T20I series 3-2 after taking the first three matches, but New Zealand responded with victories in the final two games.
New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner confirmed that Devon Conway was taken off the training ground for a hospital assessment. Speaking to the media after the session, Santner said the team would treat the head injury seriously before deciding on the opener's availability.
"It didn't look too good actually, the collision."
"It's one of those ones you want to take very seriously, head knocks. We have a backup batter in line just in case. We'll wait and see how he pulls up, but it didn't look great to be fair," Santner said.
Henry underwent concussion testing at the ground and appeared to be "OK". However, he was already in doubt for the series opener after suffering a minor quadriceps injury during the T20I series. He joined the ODI squad on Monday, and the team will assess his readiness before deciding whether he can play.
Tim Seifert would replace Devon Conway in the playing XI if the opener fails to recover in time. The wicketkeeper-batter recently scored 93 runs in the fifth T20I against India in Hamilton on Sunday, November 1, helping New Zealand finish the series with a win.
Seifert was initially selected for only the fourth and fifth ODIs but was added to the squad for the first three matches on Monday following Rachin Ravindra's injury setback. He will now remain with the squad for the entire five-match series and is in line for an opportunity if Devon Conway is unavailable.
Seifert has not played an ODI since April 2025, but his recent performance against India has strengthened his case for a place in the side. New Zealand will wait for Devon Conway's medical assessment before confirming their opening combination for the first match.
On Monday, Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra were ruled out of the entire ODI series. Chapman sustained the injury while playing in the inaugural European T20 Premier League in September.
Ravindra is also continuing his recovery after dislocating his right shoulder during a promotional shoot for Sky. He landed awkwardly on a safety mat while attempting a catch and needs more time before he can field at full capacity. However, he remains on track to recover for the two-Test series against India.
The selectors have added four players to the ODI squad following the injury setbacks. Experienced batter Henry Nicholls has been included for the first three ODIs and Dean Foxcroft for the final two.
Matt Fisher will remain with the squad throughout the series as an additional seam-bowling option. Meanwhile, fast bowlers Will O'Rourke, Zak Foulkes and Ben Sears were not considered for the series because of earlier injuries.
