Paderborn secured their second win of the season with Rayan Philippe's late strike against HSV.
Paderborn eased their relegation woes by ending Hamburger SV's three-game winning streak with a goal from the player they loaned from their guests.
Stuttgart loanee Laurin Ulrich had the first chance of the game inside two minutes. The visitors failed to clear Raphael Obermaier's free-kick, and the Germany U21 international nearly scored from 18 meters.
HSV then dealt a blow as Fabio Vieira had to be substituted off for what seemed like a hamstring injury. The youngster Otto Stange replaced the Portuguese midfielder, who is yet to produce a direct goal contribution since joining the club on a permanent transfer.
There were no clear-cut chances at either side during the first-half, which was changed two minutes after the restart. Half-time substitute Tom Baack created a big chance for Santiago Castaneda, but the US midfielder was denied by a fantastic reflex save from Daniel Heuer Fernandes.
However, there was little in the way of scoring opportunities after that until the final 20 minutes. HSV's goalkeeper made a couple of saves from Obermaier and Castaneda before Laurin Curda hit the outside of the post.
The visitors had a very lackluster performance in the final third, and they threw away their point two minutes before the end of regular time. As fate has it, HSV loanee Rayan Philippe scored the only goal of the game with a composed finish against his parent club. The 26-year-old scored his first goal for his new club a day after celebrating his birthday.
HSV protested there was a foul in the buildup, but their voices only led to a yellow card for Merlin Polzin. Paderborn are now out of the relegation zone as they get past their next opponents in the cup, Stuttgart. The traditional club will face Eintracht Frankfurt in the second round of the DFB-Pokal.
