Leeds fans booing Mathys Tel the latest example of bizarre (but hilarious) fan behaviour
Tottenham forward Mathys Tel receives treatment for an injury

Leeds United‘s Premier League match at home to Tottenham Hotspur was full of fun little quirks.

There were a few perfect examples of the sort of football fascinations and irritations you might hear discussed on the Football Cliches podcast’s Mesut Haaland Dicks.

But none were more amusing than the reason behind Mathys Tel being booed.

So, why did the Tottenham attacker get booed? Because he was on the receiving end of an absolute horror challenge from Jayden Bogle.

There appeared to be no malice in Bogle’s tackle, if you can even call it that, as he lunged for the ball with one foot and, unfortunately, planted the studs of the other right into Tel’s Achilles.

It looked extremely painful and Tel received treatment for around five minutes, which gave VAR the freedom to review the incident for longer than usual. The conclusion they came to was that it was not worthy of a red card.

To fittingly use a cliché, it was One Of Those. If it’s your team’s player, you’re saying it’s purely accidental and not a red card. If it’s against one of your players, it’s a bloody stonewaller.

And when play finally resumed, every Tel touch was greeted with loud boos from the home support, which made us chuckle and think: is this the most bizarre fan behaviour in football?

It’s certainly right up there.

Obviously, match-going fans don’t have the benefit of replays, which means they can only go off what they’ve seen live at the time. If they choose to believe Tel is playacting, that’s their prerogative.

Will a player stay down for that long and limp around after returning to action if they aren’t actually hurt? Obviously not.

And when a player subsequently has to go off injured, it’s even better. Definitely milking it, aren’t they?

That’s what happened to Tel, who left the field shortly after play resumed, and you really can’t blame him. It was a terrible challenge from Bogle, who was very, very lucky to avoid a red card.

But the boos from the home support sparked something in us. Getting booed for being absolutely crunched will never stop being funny. It really is brilliant. How dare he!

Honestly, that’s it, really. Football fans are utterly bizarre and it’s class. Their own player can do no wrong in that situation. Bogle was completely innocent, having merely breathed near Tel.
