Arsenal v Liverpool is one of the premier fixtures in the English football calendar and this weekend’s clash is as big as ever.

Both sides know that a Premier League title is within reach, with Man City set to face some sort of penalty.

Over the years, we’ve seen some exciting and memorable encounters between the Gunners and the Reds.

And with a huge showdown at Anfield today, it’s worth noting just a few of those infamous fixtures.

TalkingPoints

Here's our predicted Arsenal XI to face Liverpool. Is this the best we can put out? What changes would you make? 🤔

Arsenal 0–2 Liverpool (May 26, 1989)

Considered by many to be the most dramatic conclusion to a league season in English football history, this final-day showdown at Anfield required Arsenal to win by two clear goals to snatch the First Division title away from reigning leaders Liverpool.

After a tense, goalless first half, Alan Smith headed Arsenal into the lead. With time running out in the 92nd minute, midfielder Michael Thomas burst through the Liverpool defence and prodded the ball into the net to make it 2–0. Thomas’ goal as the most vital of strikes, giving Liverpool the title on goals scored in the most dramatic of fashions.

Liverpool 4–4 Arsenal (April 21, 2009)

Andrey Arshavin wrote his name in Arsenal history in this one. The Russian playmaker scored all four of Arsenal’s goals, converting every chance that came his way. Liverpool would not lie down and struck back through double strikes from Fernando Torres and Yossi Benayoun. In the end, it was Benayoun’s second of the game and Liverpool’s fourth that ended the goalscoring.

Liverpool 5–1 Arsenal (February 8, 2014)

The Reds raced into an astonishing 4–0 lead after just 20 minutes thanks to goals from Martin Škrtel (2), Raheem Sterling, and Daniel Sturridge. Sterling added a fifth in the second half as Liverpool showcased counter-attacking football at its absolute pinnacle.

Widely considered one of Arsenal’s biggest and most humbling defeats in Premier League history, Gunners fans will be hoping a repeat of this is nowhere to be seen at Anfield today.

Arsenal 4–2 Liverpool (April 9, 2004)

With Arsenal’s Invincible season hanging in the balance, it was left to Thierry Henry to produce and deliver a masterclass in top level striker play to down Liverpool.

Henry’s hat-trick in this game was the stuff of legend and for many Gunners, is considered one of the Frenchman’s greatest ever days.
