Commanders punter Tress Way is impressed with rookie kicker Drew Stevens.
Way was a guest Tuesday on the “Grant & Danny” show on 106.7 The Fan. Way told Grant Paulsen and Danny Rouhier that Washington's rookie kicker, Drew Stevens, is the real deal. Way said Stevens started Sunday night's Eagles game missing from 55 yards.
Head coach Dan Quinn sent him back out there to attempt a 56-yard field goal in the second quarter. “His bounce back, his mindset of rinse and repeat and being able to go right back to it, is very valuable.” Way said Stevens hadn’t even connected cleanly during warmups before the game, yet still made a 60-yard field goal.
Stevens connected on four of five field goal attempts against the Eagles on Sunday in the Commanders’ 27-10 victory. Though he missed a 55-yarder, his next attempt was from 56, “and he freaking buried it,” the excited Way said.
The rookie from Iowa is connecting on 82.4% of his field goal attempts this season, tying him for 18th among NFL kickers. Stevens has connected on 14 of his 17 attempts through the first seven games in 2026. His longest is from 57 yards (vs. Seattle), and he had a 56-yard field goal Sunday.
Way said it really impresses him, “Even as a rookie, it really is obvious to see just how raw- talented he is. It’s pretty similar to golf. You see the pros, and they have one miss. Whenever they miss the ball or miss the fairway, they kind of miss it the same way. And he is very much that way. So, whenever he sprays one off to the right, it’s the first field goal of the game, he had the juices going...when we went out there for the second field goal, I kind of just enjoy getting to be his caddy.”
Stevens has already missed three extra-point attempts, going 11-for-14 through the first seven games. But Way really likes his work ethic, his attitude, his confidence, his skill. It is also worth noting that, thus far, Stevens’ three field-goal misses are all from 50+ yards. Thus, Stevens is 4-for-7 from 50+ and 7-for-7 from 49 yards and closer.
