The Oklahoma Sooners went into "The Swamp" with a new offensive coordinator on Saturday night and upset the No. 24 Florida Gators 23-7 to move to 5-4 on the season. Jason Witten's debut as a college offensive coordinator was a good one, and John Mateer played arguably his best game of the season to help the Sooners get back on the right side of the win column.
The Sooners outgained the Gators by nearly 150 yards and owned a 15-minute edge in time of possession. Mateer completed 64% of his passes and had a little over 250 yards of total offense in the win. The Sooners were efficient, keeping ahead of the chains and putting themselves in manageable third downs throughout the night. Oklahoma went 10 of 18 on third down and were 1 for 1 on fourth down.
It was the most cohesive the Sooners' offense has looked in some time as Witten ran the ball and built play action concepts off of it. The Sooners had 39 total rushes, not including the kneel-down to end the game, and averaged 3.7 yards per carry. That still may not be the number Oklahoma wants to average on the ground, but if you run it consistently, it takes the pressure off of the passing game and allows you to be in better situations as an offense.
Jason Witten and the offensive staff deserve a lot of credit for their game plan, and the players deserve a lot of credit for their execution.
Who knows where the offense goes from here, but it was a strong start to the Jason Witten era of Oklahoma offense.
Here's how social media reacted to the win.
