Thunder handed crushing double blow after NBA star stretchered off with horrific injury
Jalen Williams will miss almost the entirety of the 2026-27 NBA season after his gruesome injury

The Oklahoma City Thunder were given a crushing double blow in light of Jalen Williams' horrific leg injury.

Late in the Thunder's 108-101 win over the Los Angeles Clippers, Williams came down awkwardly on his left leg, suffering a brutal injury that left his teammates in tears. He eventually was stretchered off the court, and it was clear that the 25-year-old would be out for the foreseeable future.

Now, more has been revealed about Williams' gruesome injury and a potential timetable, and that another Thunder star, Cason Wallace, will also miss a good portion of the 2026-27 NBA season with his own near-season-ending injury.

ESPN's Shams Charania reported that Williams had suffered a fibula injury and a dislocated ankle, while Wallace sustained a torn labrum. Thunder General Manager Sam Presti spoke with reporters and gave an update on Williams, noting that the star was "in great spirits and is extremely optimistic about the situation."

"What he's dealing with is he's got a fractured fibula," Presti said at the start of his press conference. "Dislocated ankle on the left side. This is an injury that generally we see more in football players, has spent a lot of time speaking to different doctors and his agents, us, his family, and it's a surgical situation.

"That's the way you deal with this type of injury and we'll have a timeline for everybody once we get through the surgery. So I can't really give you that right now because it would be inappropriate. Gotta see kinda where we are after that's done."

Williams' injury is just the latest in what has been a difficult two seasons for the 25-year-old. Last year, the star forward played in only 33 games due to injuries, including recovery from offseason wrist surgeries and hamstring strains during the season.

Asked how the star has remained level-headed after two injury-plagued years, Presti admitted he did not know how Williams has kept his head on his shoulders. "I go back to the people around him," he said in part. "I mean, I just think, again, we've been blessed to have some great players who are great people, but we've also had some incredible families.

"It may not even be family, maybe a mentor, maybe a coach. Everybody's family is different. But someone, I think, is helping, has built his mindset. And he has, he's an elite mindset, you know? It's what makes him a great player. It's what keeps him motivated."

Along with Williams, Wallace also will be out for most, if not all, of the year.

"He has a left labral tear in his shoulder," Presti informed reporters. "Again, that's gonna be a surgical situation as well. Timeline, we're gonna have to get to that again once we have the surgery.

"We're going through the process right now to determine next steps. I think everybody knows he's a total warrior and probably would've gone back in the game if we let him."

With Wallace and Williams lost, the Thunder will have to make do without two impact players. As for what comes next in constructing the roster, Presti admitted he had not considered the moves Oklahoma City would make to bolster the team.

"Right now, it's about those two guys, their families who, I mean, these guys have the best families and trying to be there for everybody, working through all the medical information, like I was saying before, making sure that I had something I could get in front of you guys to give you something," the general manager said.
