Chelsea goalkeeper Emi Martinez is “hoping to return from injury ahead of schedule”, according to reports.
The Standard claim that the Argentinian international is “optimistic” that he can be back available for selection sooner than expected.
Martinez broke his jaw during the 2-0 win over Everton earlier this month, and he required surgery. At the time, it was estimated that he would be out for between 6 to 8 weeks.
The 34-year-old has already been on the sidelines for just over 2 weeks, but it appears a comeback before the international break is possible.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference prior to the defeat to Tottenham, manager Xabi Alonso said that the keeper could be available in “less” than a “few weeks”.
The Spaniard did caveat those remarks by saying the doctors would have the final say on when Martinez could play again, but it appears the player himself also believes a swift return is on the cards.
One potential solution for Martinez is to be fitted with a protective mask. Players (most famously Victor Osimhen) wear them for facial injuries, including broken noses and cheekbones.
It could be suitable for a jaw, although you do have to consider that he is a goalkeeper, rather than an outfield player, so there are different risks involved.
Following the Manchester United game, Chelsea have just one more fixture before the international break. That is against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light next Sunday. It will be interesting to see whether Martinez is in the matchday squad for the game, or whether he will have to wait until the return of club fixtures later this month. After facing the Black Cats, Alonso’s men take on Leeds United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday 21st November.
