Yankees let former MLB GMs Omar Minaya, Brian Sabean go, shaking up front-office staff

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman is shaking up the team's front office after a second-place finish in the American League East and losing a three-game sweep to the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL division series.

Special assistants Omar Minaya and Brian Sabean, both former MLB GMs, will not have their contracts renewed, the New York Post's Jon Heyman reported. Each was hired before the 2023 season.

Minaya, 67, was the GM of the Montreal Expos from 2002-04 and the New York Mets from 2004-2010. As an executive adviser to Cashman, he reportedly played a major role in the Yankees' 2023 trade for Juan Soto. Minaya was also said to be influential in the team signing pitcher Max Fried as a free agent, having been in the San Diego Padres' front office when he was drafted.

Sabean, 70, began his front-office career as a scout with the Yankees before joining the San Francisco Giants and eventually becoming the team's GM and building three World Series championship teams from 2010-2014. His title upon his return to the Yankees was senior adviser.

Whether or not Cashman chooses to replace Minaya and Sabean with personnel more versed in analytics has yet to be determined. The Yankees also will not be bringing back longtime scouts Tommy Wilson and Pat Murtaugh, according to the New York Post's Joel Sherman.

Wilson joined the Yankees in 2004 after his four-year MLB playing career ended. Murtaugh had been with the team since 2015 and is retiring.

Perhaps indicating where the Yankees will devote future resources, the Yankees are hiring Frank Herrmann as supervisor for global evaluation/player development integration, Sherman reports.

Herrmann, 42, most recently worked for the Toronto Blue Jays in the scouting, player development and baseball operations departments. He pitched four seasons in the majors as a reliever with the Cleveland Guardians and Philadelphia Phillies.

Despite the front-office turnover, the Yankees have largely maintained the status quo thus far in the offseason with Cashman and manager Aaron Boone both returning. Pitching coach Matt Blake was also signed to a three-year contract extension.
