Josh Tongue has been ruled out of the forthcoming ODI series against Australia with a toe injury, the ECB confirmed on Saturday (November 7). Tongue suffered the injury to the big left toe and will now return to the UK for further assessment.
Tongue, 28, was initially rested for the T20I leg of the Australia tour and selected only for the ODIs as part of a broader workload management plan. White-ball coach Brendon McCullum had even indicated that he wanted to work closely with his red-ball counterpart, Stephen Fleming, to better manage the workloads of players across the England system.
Tongue was most recently in action in the ODI tri-series in Pakistan, where he featured in just one game, returning figures of 3 for 79 as Sri Lanka chased down England's 429 for a sensational win in Rawalpindi. He played in two ODIs at home against the same opposition after impressing against Pakistan, where he took 19 wickets from three Tests.
England haven't named a replacement for Tongue. The first ODI of the three-match series starts on November 13 in Perth.
