Hardik Pandya is set to leave Mumbai Indians and join Punjab Kings in a major player exchange ahead of the IPL 2027 season. The proposed trade will see India left-arm fast bowler Arshdeep Singh move to Mumbai in return for the all-rounder, potentially reshaping the squads of both franchises before the upcoming mini-auction.
According to reports, Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings have agreed to the exchange, with the initial paperwork completed. However, the deal still requires formal approval from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the IPL governing council before it can be officially confirmed.
The move would bring an end to Hardik's second stint with Mumbai Indians, where he returned in 2024 and took over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma.
For Mumbai Indians, Arshdeep's arrival could address an important requirement in their bowling attack. The left-arm pacer has established himself as one of India's leading white-ball bowlers and has been particularly effective during the powerplay and death overs.
Arshdeep has taken 111 wickets in 96 IPL appearances, having represented Punjab Kings throughout his IPL career. His ability to swing the new ball and deliver accurate yorkers at the death could make him a valuable partner for Jasprit Bumrah.
The addition would also give Mumbai another established Indian fast-bowling option, potentially allowing greater flexibility when selecting overseas players.
Punjab Kings, meanwhile, stand to gain an experienced all-rounder capable of contributing with both bat and ball. Hardik's power-hitting, seam bowling and experience in high-pressure matches could strengthen the team's balance.
He is expected to join Punjab as a player, with Shreyas Iyer continuing as captain. Hardik's experience of leading Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans could also provide additional leadership within the dressing room.
However, his fitness remains an important consideration. The all-rounder has reportedly been dealing with a right shin bone stress response, alongside other injury setbacks, and has not played competitive cricket since IPL 2026.

Hardik's departure would close a three-season period as Mumbai Indians captain. His appointment in 2024 was followed by considerable attention, particularly after Rohit Sharma's removal from the leadership role. Reports suggest Rohit could return as Mumbai's captain for IPL 2027, although the franchise has yet to make an official announcement.
Mumbai finished ninth in the 2026 season, while Punjab narrowly missed the playoffs after a disappointing second half of their campaign.
The IPL 2027 mini-auction is scheduled for December 16 in Goa, with the player-retention deadline extended to November 17. The franchises are expected to complete the remaining formalities before the auction.
If approved, the Hardik-Arshdeep exchange will be one of the biggest transfers ahead of IPL 2027, giving both teams an opportunity to address key squad requirements before the new season.
