Bangladesh batter Towhid Hridoy scripted history in Test cricket with a magnificent unbeaten 242 against West Indies in the second Test at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium. The 25-year-old produced a remarkable innings on Saturday (November 7), to become Bangladesh’s highest individual run-scorer in Test cricket, surpassing the previous record held by veteran wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim.
Playing only his third Test match, Hridoy delivered a career-defining performance to rescue Bangladesh from a difficult position and put the hosts ahead in the first innings. His knock combined patience, attacking strokeplay and tremendous composure under pressure.
Hridoy remained unbeaten on 242 off 359 deliveries, smashing 22 fours and 11 sixes. His innings eclipsed Mushfiqur’s previous national record of 219 not out, scored against Zimbabwe in 2018.
The milestone was particularly special because Hridoy became the first Bangladesh batter to convert his maiden Test century into a double century. He also became only the fourth Bangladeshi player to score a double hundred in Test cricket, joining Mushfiqur, Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan.
His 11 sixes were another significant achievement, placing him among the players with the most sixes in a single Test innings. Hridoy’s record-breaking knock also established a new benchmark for an individual score at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.
Bangladesh faced a challenging situation after West Indies posted 356 in their first innings. The hosts began the third day at 88/3, still trailing by 268 runs, and needed a substantial partnership to remain competitive.
However, wickets continued to fall around Hridoy. Mushfiqur scored 34 before being dismissed, while Litton Das, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Hasan Mahmud also departed as Bangladesh slipped into trouble.
At 184/7, the hosts appeared vulnerable to conceding a significant first-innings lead. Hridoy refused to surrender, maintaining his concentration while finding valuable support from the lower order.
He shared a crucial 117-run partnership for the eighth wicket with Taijul Islam, who contributed 22. After Taijul’s dismissal, Hridoy continued the fight alongside Taskin Ahmed, adding another 85 runs for the ninth wicket.
The right-hander eventually guided Bangladesh to 386, giving his team a 30-run first-innings lead.
A monumental knock for the history books 🌟

Hridoy’s remarkable performance gave Bangladesh a valuable advantage in the second and final Test of the series. West Indies began their second innings cautiously and reached 7/0 before bad light brought an early end to the third day.
The visitors remained 23 runs behind Bangladesh at stumps, with all 10 second-innings wickets intact.
With the match still finely poised, Bangladesh will hope to turn the advantage created by Hridoy into a decisive result against West Indies.
