NBA rescinds Luka Dončić's technical foul during win over Heat, bringing him back to 1 on the season

Luka Dončić’s latest technical foul has been called off.

The league rescinded a technical foul that the Los Angeles Lakers star had picked up during their 138-117 win over the Miami Heat. The foul, which Dončić earned during the second quarter of Monday night’s contest at Crypto.com Arena, was reviewed by the league on Tuesday.

That has brought Dončić to just a single technical foul on the season so far.

The incident on Monday night happened after Dončić reacted to a call an official made, which led to a very candid conversation between Dončić and the officials on the broadcast.

“I clapped. That’s a technical? Come on now,” Dončić was heard telling the official. ”If it was anybody else, you know it’s not a technical. Come on now.”

Klay Thompson hit the free throw after the technical, which brought the Heat within five points at the time.

Dončić was asked about the technical after the game, but he did not want to get into it.

Regardless of his run-in with the officials, Dončić still finished with 42 points, 13 assists and seven rebounds in the win on Monday night. He’s averaged 43.4 points per game over the last five outings, too, which included a 52-point night against the Utah Jazz late last month.

The Lakers now sit at 6-2 on the season.

Dončić has had issues with technical fouls in the past. He was suspended for a game last season after reaching the 16-technical foul threshhold, which triggers an automatic one-game suspension. He had three straight seasons with 15 technical fouls each, too, but only had 13 during the 2024-25 campaign to braek the streak.

By comparison, two players in the league already have three technical fouls already this season. Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green is one of them after he was ejected on Monday night for an incident during their win over the Phoenix Suns. Houston’s Jabarai Smith Jr. also has three.

It’s still very early in the regular season, and Dončić has a long way to go before having to worry about such a penalty again. But having Monday’s rescinded undoubtedly gives him extra room to work with down the stretch.
