Supercomputer replaces John Eustace with Rob Edwards at Derby County - here's what happens

Derby County are in free-fall at the moment, and if results don't turn around sooner rather than later, the Rams face the risk of being cut adrift from the rest of the pack.

Derby County find themselves seven points adrift in the Championship relegation zone after 14 games, with just one win all campaign, as only Preston North End are keeping the Rams off the bottom right now.

A 4-0 home defeat to Norwich City in their most recent outing, one would imagine, could well be the final nail in the coffin for Rams boss Eustace, having lost a large section of the club's supporters, and, going off the performances on the pitch, the players, too.

With an international break right around the corner, the writing could be on the wall for Eustace, as Derby must line up a replacement ASAP.

Derby County should consider appointing former Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Rob Edwards to replace the under-pressure John Eustace

Eustace took charge of Derby in February 2025 and guided the Rams to safety in his first few months in charge. One win in ten league games to open the 2025/26 campaign had alarm bells ringing, but Eustace and Derby bounced back with aplomb, eventually falling just short of the play-offs last time around.

Now, that optimism has been completely sapped from the club, which now finds itself ready to make a crucial decision which could make or break their season.

If Eustace is indeed dismissed, Derby should try to line up a move for former Luton Town, Middlesbrough, and Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Rob Edwards, with the Welsh head coach out of work since his dismissal from the latter in the summer.

What AI thinks would happen if Rob Edwards replaced John Eustace at Derby County

Rob Edwards - Wolves

Edwards, 43, started his managerial career with Telford United, before spells with Wolves' U23s, England's U16s, Forest Green Rovers, Watford, Luton, Middlesbrough, and Wolves followed.

Having helped Luton to the Premier League in 2023 via the play-offs, the Welsh head coach was unable to keep the Hatters in the top flight, and struggled the following year in the Championship before his eventual dismissal.

With a career full of ups and downs already, Football League World asked AI chatbot ChatGPT exactly what it thinks would happen if Edwards were to become Eustace's successor at Derby right now.

AI said: Rob Edwards would be a good appointment for Derby County given his Championship experience, promotion-winning record with Luton and impressive spell at Middlesbrough. His biggest priority would be improving a defence that has conceded 29 goals in 14 matches, while restoring confidence to a struggling squad.

The seven-point gap to safety is recoverable, but Derby cannot afford to wait much longer for results to improve. Edwards has the tactical experience to make them more organised and difficult to beat, although the scale of the task shouldn't be underestimated.

My prediction: 20th place. I think Edwards could steer Derby to survival, but it would likely go down to the final few games of the season.

If you could offer any Derby fan the chance for guaranteed survival right now, you would do well to find someone who wouldn't take it, as if AI's prediction were correct, the Rams must go all out for Edwards ASAP and waste no time.

What do you make of AI's prediction? Do you think Rob Edwards would be a good replacement for Eustace at Derby? If not, who would you want to be appointed? Share your thoughts below!

Derby County must ensure they get their next appointment spot on in case John Eustace is sacked

If Eustace is indeed dismissed, Derby must ensure they do their due diligence before appointing his successor, with their Championship status firmly on the line.

A huge upturn in performances and form is a necessity if the Rams want to avoid the drop, and whether Edwards is the correct person for the job remains to be seen.

Whether the Welshman would have any interest in taking the role at Pride Park is also a matter of debate, having already rejected the chance to go to Burnley.

It's a crucial moment in Derby's season, as time will tell how this one plays out.
