Aldershot Town manager Scott Davies praises side's resilience after National League win against Gateshead

Aldershot Town manager Scott Davies praised his side’s resilience after they returned to winning ways with a 1-0 victory at home to Gateshead in the National League.

The Shots had lost their previous five league games, but Brody Peart’s fifth-minute goal was enough to earn all three points in front of a crowd of 1,618 at the EBB Stadium.

Aldershot created plenty of chances to extend their advantage in the first half, but Davies was particularly pleased with his side’s resilience after the break to deny Gateshead a leveller and pick up a clean sheet.

“I thought we were exceptionally good for 45 minutes,” said Davies.

“Gateshead might have got one or two, but if we were 6-2 up at half-time I don't think it would have been an unfair reflection of the scoreline.

“At half-time we told the lads to stay aggressive, stay on the front foot and deny the space on the pitch, but we’re a team that hadn't won for a long time and that showed.

“I told the lads that if they didn't get the second, they were going to have to be resilient.

“I also wanted them to be relentless and ruthless, but they didn't manage to do that in front of goal.

“What did come up trumps was the resilience of the group.

“Nick Hayes made a couple of great saves and the boys have thrown their bodies in the way and got some brave blocks in. We managed to see it out.

“I’m extremely proud. I thought it was a collective effort – this is what this club is all about.

“The boys on the pitch gave their all, and the supporters were absolutely phenomenal. They really drove us on – they sung the whole second half when there wasn't really too much going on.

“That win is for the players and the supporters. It gives us a bit of belief.

“The clean sheet and the win are the most important things. The performance comes secondary at the moment, but the performance in the first half was up there with the best we’ve been this season.

“It’s a shame we're not ruthless enough in front of goal at the moment, but this is a process. We're getting chances, which is a positive.

“The lads are very young, so they're going to lack a little bit of game management. After five defeats it was never going to be plain sailing.”
