Wells urges Colorado to keep showing strength and maturity

Matt Wells was thrilled with the maturity he saw from the Colorado Rapids last time out and is hoping to see more of that when they host the Vancouver Whitecaps in MLS.

The Colorado Rapids sit in the final wildcard spot in the Western Conference but are currently on a five-game winless streak in the league (D4 L1).

They have drawn each of their last three matches, shutting up shop to play out a goalless draw with the Portland Timbers last time out.

It was the Rapids' first clean sheet since their last win, which came against CF Montreal on September 12 (1-0), and Wells is hoping they can rally to another big result to keep their playoff hopes alive.

"There's still too many times in games recently where I've realised we're a little way away from where I want us to get to as a team, just in terms of the stuff I keep alluding to about the strength and the stability of the team in key moments," Wells said.

"We've been too soft, and we've also done a couple of naive things that you guys and other guys could rightfully say was a little bit immature at key moments of the game.

"We were keen to eradicate that [against Portland]. I thought we did that to really good effect. I loved how mature we looked as a group. We looked together. We looked committed."

Vancouver remain top of the West, having returned to winning ways last time out when they edged past Austin FC 2-1.

They were winless in four prior to that match (D3 L1), but Jesper Sorensen is continuing to use these final four games as a chance to fine-tune elements of his team before the playoffs.

"The players look good, and it's now the final time of year," he said. "We have to be ready physically, and we also have to be ready mentally.

"We're a good team, so now we just have to also see if we need to do something before the playoffs in regards to changing it up a little bit or maybe trying some new stuff we haven't done yet."

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Colorado Rapids – Paxten Aaronson

Paxten Aaronson has tallied seven goals and nine assists this regular season.

The only other Rapids player to reach those marks in a single season since 2010 is Djordje Mihailovic in 2024 (11 goals, 12 assists).

Vancouver Whitecaps – Brian White

Brian White scored a brace in Vancouver's last meeting with Colorado in April, his fifth and sixth career regular-season goals against the Rapids.

The only teams White has scored more regular-season goals against in his career are St. Louis City SC and Portland Timbers (eight goals).

MATCH PREDICTION: VANCOUVER WHITECAPS WIN

Each of the last three meetings between Colorado and Vancouver has resulted in a multi-goal victory for one team, including a 3-1 win by the Whitecaps in April.

Neither team in the series has ever won consecutive matches by multiple goals.

The Rapids' last three matches have been draws after having just three draws in their previous 20 regular-season matches.

It is the first time Colorado have drawn three straight MLS games since April 2023, while the club have not had four straight since doing so in September 2021.
