A local club legend has the support of football fans across Somerset after being diagnosed with cancer. Terry Skiverton, known as 'Skivo', announced his diagnosis with throat cancer on Friday (October 24).

The 51-year-old assistant manager for AFC Wimbledon enjoyed an 11-year playing career at Yeovil Town FC before going onto become their manager, then assistant manager, then manager and then assistant manager once again.

Now behind the EFL League One club as of May 2022, the club has confirmed that he had been diagnosed from throat cancer and would begin treatment in the coming weeks.

A club statement said:, external "Terry has been receiving valuable support from the League Managers Association (LMA) in recent months, and the club will continue to stand alongside him and his family throughout his treatment and recovery.

"Everyone at AFC Wimbledon sends Terry their heartfelt best wishes as he prepares for the next stage of his treatment."

Among messages of support were these words from Brian Langford: "Skivo I am shocked having just read this news as I am sure you and close family and friends were when they heard the news.

"Though I once shook your hand I have never spoken with you or know you personally however, I have seen you play for Yeovil, Captain Yeovil and manage Yeovil.

"If you can take the massive heart, effort and positive nature of what you displayed then into battling with this disease then cancer has a fight on it's hands."

Louise Brooks said: "You’ve got this, Terry. You always were a battler on the pitch, known for your fight, determination and never-give-up attitude."

"The determination you showed at Yeovil will get through the treatment and you will soon be back on the bench at Wimbledon. All the best," added Ian Campbell.
