Dylan Garand made 32 saves as the New York Rangers snapped a four-game losing streak, defeating the St. Louis Blues 3-1 at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday.
Garand took a shutout into the final minute of the third period before surrendering a rebound goal to Pius Suter at 19:02. He recorded his first win since Oct. 19 and earned First Star honors for his bounce-back effort.
The Rangers improved to 7-2-0 at home and jumped back into third place in the Metropolitan Division with 17 points (8-7-1).
New York opened the scoring for the first time in five games. Adam Fox found the back of the net 1:49 into the second period, part of a two-point effort for the club’s leading scorer (19 points). The Rangers are 8-1-0 when they score first this season.
Will Cuylle lined up at center for the first time in his five-year NHL career. He logged 18:19 of ice time and recorded an assist on Oliver Bjorkstrand’s third-period goal. Eeli Tolvanen enjoyed his first two-point game with the Blueshirts, sealing the win with an empty-net goal at 17:59.
The Rangers took six penalties, including five stick infractions. But the League’s No. 3-ranked penalty kill shined, holding St. Louis scoreless on all six power-play opportunities, including a 6-on-4 sequence in the final 22 seconds of regulation.
“I think it’s a little concerning the type of stick infractions we’re taking game in and game out,” coach Mike Sullivan said postgame. “It’s a lot to ask to have the penalty kill have to kill that many opportunities against a real good power play. But I thought those guys that were on it did a terrific job.”
New York failed to convert on four of their own power-play opportunities Tuesday.
Garand weathered a first-period ambush from the Blues, who recorded nine of the game’s first 11 shots. But despite taking three stick-infraction penalties in the opening 20 minutes, New York entered the first intermission with a 10-9 shots deficit, sparked by a strong push from its second power-play unit.
The Rangers broke the scoreless tie in the second period, 43 seconds after killing off their third penalty. J.T. Miller connected with Tye Kartye on a breakout pass, and Kartye fed a trailing Fox, who fired it over Blues goalie Joel Hofer’s glove for his second goal of the season.
They posted a 63.97 percent expected-goal share in the middle frame, according to Natural Stat Trick, but could only muster one goal against Hofer, who sprawled out across the net twice to deny a pair of New York flurries.
Garand matched Hofer’s theatrics, flashing the leather against Philip Broberg on a 2-on-1 rush at 10:28.
Cuylle created New York’s second goal at 9:01 of the third period, poking the puck away from Mason McTavish in the offensive zone. He got a secondary assist for his efforts when Bjorkstrand finished off a tic-tac-toe passing sequence by firing the puck into a wide-open net after Hofer lunged left to defend Tolvanen at the side of the net.
Gabe Perreault appeared to give the Rangers a 3-0 lead at 13:10, but officials waved it off after determining that the second-year forward kicked in Fox’s rebound.
Tolvanen’s empty-netter provided the cushion, which proved helpful after Suter backhanded a rebound off Garand’s pad and into the net with 58 seconds left in regulation. A delay-of-game penalty on Alberts Smits gave St. Louis one last power-play at 19:38, but the Blues did not record a shot on goal.
New York closes out its four-game homestand Thursday night against the Philadelphia Flyers.
