The indicative starting grid of the United States Grand Prix with penalties applied

  • Kimi Antonelli will start the United States Grand Prix on pole after beating Max Verstappen in qualifying. He is now perfectly placed to get the win he needs if he is to have any chance of securing the drivers' title on Sunday, though he also needs Lewis Hamilton to finish fifth or below and for George Russell to be no higher than ninth for that to happen.
  • Isack Hadjar joined team-mate Verstappen in the top three as Red Bull found impressive pace in qualifying, despite both drivers having spent most of the weekend complaining about the balance of their cars.
  • Ferrari dominated practice, Charles Leclerc quickest in both sessions on Friday while Hamilton topped the timesheets in FP3. But their pace deserted them when it mattered and neither ever looked in contention for pole in Q3.
  • Lando Norris had his best time deleted for a track limits violation, which dropped him to eighth in the qualifying result despite having been sixth quickest on the road.
  • Three drivers are confirmed as serving grid penalties on Sunday, all for new engine parts. Arvid Lindblad qualified ninth but drops five places, Franco Colapinto is serving a 10-place drop having qualified 14th and Gabriel Bortoleto will be at the very back with 60 places' worth of penalties for a whole swathe of new components, having been 13th on the road.
