Darian Mensah stats: Miami QB struggles mightily without Malachi Toney

Darian Mensah looked like the key that would unlock the Miami Hurricanes' national championship potential throughout their 8-0 start to the 2026 season. But the first half of his first game without his Heisman-contending lead receiver led to some dire numbers.

Mensah came over from Duke on a controversial transfer that certainly paid off to begin the year. Through his first eight games with Miami, the junior completed nearly 81% of his passes, which would break the FBS record shared by Bo Nix and Mac Jones. He was in the top-10 nationally in passing yards and touchdowns with an unreal 25:1 touchdown-to-interception ratio.

But all that came with Malachi Toney on his own record-breaking pace. The sophomore wideout injured his ankle in practice the week before the Hurricanes' big date with Notre Dame, and he is expected to be out until the College Football Playoff. Miami would need to rely on their star QB to carry them there.

Early returns have not been promising. Miami entered halftime in South Bend down 17-3. The No. 1 offense in the country was held to 145 yards with just one drive into scoring range, one that ended in a field goal after Mensah was smothered on a designed run from the 1-yard line.

It's been a rough start for the Miami offense, No. 1 in the country entering the game with 47.6 points per game and second with 534.9 yards per game. In the first half Nov. 7, Miami was outgained 251-145 with Notre Dame beating them in the air 205-49. The Canes picked up eight first downs, the Irish 15. Miami was 0 for 6 on third downs; Notre Dame was 3 for 7.

Darian Mensah stats

In the first half, Mensah went just 6 of 12 for 74 yards. The offense has averaged 332.4 passing yards per game to start the season, fourth-best in all of FBS. He's just 2 for 6 for 37 yards on balls thrown at least 5 yards downfield.

"CJ Carr right now is a guy that you're feeling ... you're feeling his impact on the game," Joshua Perry said on NBC's halftime show. "The other side of that, you're not feeling Darian Mensah at all. Fifty percent completion for the most accurate quarterback in college football right now, and a lot of that is Notre Dame's defense flying around, dominating the line of scrimmage. And that secondary? Those guys are zooming to it."

"They have not faced a defense like this to date," Nicole Auerbach said. "Obviously not having Malachi Toney, that impacts it and what Notre Dame is able to do defensively knowing that he's not out there."
