Shreyas Iyer had a moment to forget in the second T20I against New Zealand as the Indian skipper dropped a simple catch that gave Bevon Jacobs a lifeline at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. The ball was right in his hands, but Shreyas Iyer failed to hold on, leaving Prince Yadav in complete disbelief.

The most painful thing for India was that Jacobs made full use of the opportunity. The New Zealand batter went on to score a half-century and joined hands with Glenn Phillips to take the hosts to a commanding position against India in Christchurch.

Shreyas Iyer's costly mistake leaves Prince Yadav stunned

The incident happened in the 11th over of New Zealand's innings, with the hosts at 71/3 in the second T20I against India at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Saturday, October 24. Prince Yadav bowled a hard-length delivery around the middle and off, forcing Bevon Jacobs to attempt a flat-batted shot down the ground.

The shot did not come off the middle of the bat, and the ball went straight towards Shreyas Iyer at mid-off. It looked like a straightforward, waist-high catch, but Shreyas Iyer somehow let it slip through his hands. He tried to grab the ball on the rebound, but it fell to the ground.

Prince Yadav could hardly believe how Shreyas Iyer fumbled the easy chance, while Jacobs got a massive lifeline. Jacobs was batting on 20 when the catch was dropped. He then made the most of the lifeline and went on to score 58 runs off 46 balls against India.

Glenn Phillips and Bevon Jacobs turn the game around

The New Zealand National Cricket Team had lost three wickets for just 41 runs in the sixth over and needed a strong partnership to get back into the match.

Glenn Phillips and Bevon Jacobs stepped up at the right time, first settling down before launching their attack in the middle and later overs. Amid this, Gautam Gambhir messes up Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s confidence as youngster fails, Sanju Samson also flops.

Phillips smashed 70 runs off 43 balls, while Jacobs played a crucial knock of 58 off 46 deliveries. They stitched a huge 116-run stand for the fourth wicket, helping New Zealand recover from a shaky start to take them to 180/5 on the board in 20 overs against India.

How Tilak Varma stole victory from New Zealand

Meanwhile, New Zealand will be disappointed with how they lost the second T20I after putting India under huge pressure at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. When Mitchell Santner dismissed Naman Dhir, India needed nearly 70 runs from the last five overs with only four wickets left.

The pitch was tough for batting, and there was little dew to help the batters. However, Tilak Varma once again proved his ability to handle pressure. He attacked Jacob Duffy and Nathan Smith in the final overs, as the New Zealand bowlers failed to execute their plans. Santner had bowled brilliantly, taking four wickets for just 21 runs, but his hard work went in vain.
