Kevin Pietersen calls for free entry to Test matches amid poor attendance in South Africa

The former England batter has proposed a bold solution to poor attendance at South African Test grounds, suggesting boards should rely on franchise tournaments for revenue.

Former England captain Kevin Pietersen has called for free entry to Test matches at venues struggling to attract spectators, following poor attendance during the ongoing Test series between South Africa and England. The former batter believes cricket boards should consider alternative revenue streams, particularly franchise tournaments, instead of relying on ticket sales for traditional-format matches.

The opening Test in Durban witnessed fewer than 20,000 spectators across five days, with attendance remaining well below Kingsmead's capacity. The second Test at St George's Park in Gqeberha has also struggled to attract sizeable crowds, despite South Africa producing a strong performance against England.

The low turnout has sparked discussions about the declining interest in Test cricket at certain venues. On Day 3 of the ongoing match, former Australia captain David Warner also questioned the lack of spectators at St George's Park, particularly with the contest reaching an interesting stage.

Taking to X, Pietersen suggested that cricket boards should allow spectators to attend Test matches for free at venues where attendance remains a concern. He also questioned whether the revenue generated through ticket sales justified the largely empty stands in Durban and Gqeberha.

"Test cricket in places that struggle for crowds should be FREE to enter! Boards should make their money off their franchise tournaments. There is no way that Durban and PE have made enough money off ticket sales to justify no one there watching," wrote Pietersen.

Pietersen's comments have brought renewed attention to the challenge of attracting spectators to Test cricket, particularly as franchise-based competitions continue to generate significant commercial interest. His suggestion highlights the need to explore ways of improving attendance and ensuring that fans continue to engage with the longest format of the game.

Apart from raising concerns about crowd attendance, Pietersen also shared his views on the traditional appearance of Test cricket kits. The former England captain expressed his dislike for players wearing their names and numbers on the backs of their jerseys in the longest format.

"Call me old fashioned but I don't like players' names and numbers on their back in Test cricket," he wrote in another post.

Test cricket has traditionally been associated with players wearing plain white clothing, although names and numbers have become a feature of international Test kits in recent years. Pietersen's comments reflect his preference for the traditional presentation of the format.

Meanwhile, following the disappointing attendance during the Durban Test, the KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union (KZNCU) stated that it would conduct a "thorough internal review" to identify the reasons behind the low turnout.

The review could help the organisers understand the factors affecting spectator interest and explore potential measures to improve attendance at future matches. With the second Test in Gqeberha also witnessing largely empty stands, Pietersen's remarks have added to the wider debate about how cricket boards can maintain public interest in Test cricket.
