Chris Sutton has taken a jibe at a Rangers player during the half-time show on Sky Sports Football.
The former Celtic striker was watching Gers take on St Mirren in Paisley in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday night.
The Light Blues went into the break with a 1-0 lead, and Sutton, as always, was in the mood to find faults with one of their players.
Sutton believes that James Penrice tricked Nick Walsh, the on-field referee, into giving Rangers a penalty in the first half against St Mirren. Samuel Ramos was deemed to have brought down the left-back, and the VAR did not see anything to overturn the decision.
Penrice was played in by Minsu Kim near the left corner of the area. As he turned or tried to work the ball back toward goal, the St Mirren winger closed him down inside his own box while trying to win the ball. Ramos made contact with the Scottish defender during the challenge, who then went down, and Walsh, who had a clear view, immediately pointed to the penalty spot.
However, Sutton had a completely different view. He said: “There has to be sufficient contact.
“James Penrice has played Nick Walsh like a piccolo for the penalty.”
Sutton has made a punditry career by criticising everything Rangers and their players do. His comments on Penrice are just the latest example of that.
He mentions “sufficient contact”, but that can only be determined by Penrice and sometimes, even the slightest of nicks is enough to bring a player down. One would think that being a former player, he would understand that, but clearly not.
Walsh was in a perfect position to make the call and he had a team of referees looking at it from all games. None of them felt that Penrice tricked the referee, as Sutton alludes to, because if they did, they could have asked the on-field referee to have another look at the incident.
This was one of those decisions where the VAR does not get involved, as they are not clear-and-obvious errors. Walsh saw contact, deemed it sufficient for Penrice to go down, and rightly pointed to the spot.
