Hereford lose 24-12 at Kenilworth in difficult conditions

The hosts led 10-5 at half-time after a penalty and converted try, before adding two further tries after the interval.

Hereford won the toss and chose to play against the wind in the opening half, hoping to limit Kenilworth’s advantage.

The home side initially controlled territory and built an eight-point lead through a penalty and a converted try.

The Wyesiders responded with determination from a lineout inside the Kenilworth 22-metre area.

A well-executed catch-and-drive move crossed the line, allowing Scott Robinson to score, although the conversion attempt fell short.

Kenilworth began the second half strongly after Hereford lost possession, with the hosts collecting the loose ball and running the length of the field for another try.

The visitors continued to compete and reduced the deficit when Luke Yarranton touched down from a driving maul following another lineout.

However, a third Kenilworth try and successful conversion restored a 12-point advantage.

Hereford created a late opportunity after winning possession on the hosts’ five-metre line, but were slow using the ball and allowed the referee to call “use it” before turning the possession over.

The away side attacked with greater urgency during the final 10 minutes, yet could not make inroads towards getting back into the game.

Director of Rugby Dean Powell praised his players’ effort and attitude but admitted their decision-making and execution in the red zone remained a concern.

He added:  ”Weather conditions at Kenilworth were awful, windy wet and cold.

"These kind of conditions are a great leveller and with the team I had, I was confident we could do a job.

"We won the toss, chose to play against the wind and worked hard to reach half time, down by 10 points to 5.

"I was pleased, going in at half time knowing the wind was at our backs in the second half.

"Kenilworth should have been ahead by more, we didn’t play that well and were lucky in many respects.

"At half time we said we need to play territory, keep our discipline and take our chances.

"These we did with the exception of the latter, we just didn’t take our chances, the story of our season at the moment, just so frustrating."
