The former chairman of Bradford City, Geoffrey Richmond, has died at the age of 85.

Richmond helped oversee the Bantams' promotion to the Premier League in 1999, marking the first time the club had played in the top flight for 77 years.

Announcing his death on Sunday, the club said Richmond had also "played an important role in the redevelopment" of its Valley Parade ground during his eight years as chairman.

A City spokesperson added: "The thoughts of everyone at Bradford City AFC are with Geoffrey's family and friends at this difficult time."

Richmond, who was born in Leeds and also served as chairman of Scarborough, took over at Valley Parade in 1994.

The club was promoted to the First Division two years later after beating Notts County in a play-off final on its Wembley debut, before reaching the top flight in 1999.

A famous David Wetherall header against Liverpool ensured survival on the final day of the season, but the club was relegated the following year after spending big on wages for players such as Benito Carbone and Stan Collymore.

With the club in financial turmoil, Richmond left in 2002.

Paying tribute on X, Collymore said: "Incredibly sad news to hear. Larger than life character, gave me an opportunity to play for a fine football club, however brief.

"Rest in peace, Geoffrey."

Football reporter Alan Biggs described Richmond as "charismatic and controversial in equal measure".

He added: "Can only speak from personal experience; provided many a story. Friendly, though could be cantankerous if you disagreed with him eg. over manager turnover."

The Leeds-based New Rover Cricket Club, where Richmond was also a chairman and player, said he had played a "significant role" in its history.

The club, based in Adel, said: "His contribution to New Rover, both on and off the field, will never be forgotten.

"He was a valued member of our club family, and his commitment helped shape the club we are proud to be today."
